Music Aural Tests
1. If faced with a question like, ” Sing from memory a four bar melody played twice by the examiner,”- what I personally do is while the examiner is playing the piece, just hum in quietly to yourself. When he plays it again, hum it again. Then when asks to sing it, just recall what you have hummed. This is much easier than straining your ears, trying to listen to it. If you get this right, you can score a lot of points for the Music Aural Test section.
2. When faced with a question like, ” Clap the rhythm from a short extract played twice by the examiner and state whether it is 2,3, or 4 time”- just clap softly while he is playing the extract, then recall what you have clapped. While doing so, just try out all the different rhythms- silently count “1 and 2 and” and if that doesn’t fit in, count “1 and 2 and 3 and” and if that still doesn’t work, try “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and”.
Finding out if it “fits” in is easy. Just listen to the strong beat (a note played a little louder than the rest), and that should signal the start of a new bar. Use that to find out the time signature.
3. A Question like “Sing the upper part of a two part phrase”- just concentrate only on the upper part- ignore the other part. This tests your concentration and scores lots of points in the aural test if done correctly.
4. When getting to higher grades, you may get asked a question about cadences, and stating whether they are perfect, imperfect or interrupted. The way I decide whether it is perfect, imperfect or interrupted is this: When it is perfect, the song feels complete. You went on a journey and arrived back home. When it is imperfect, you went on a journey, but ended up a bit lost and ended up in your friend’s home. When it is interrupted (which is easy to tell) is when you are completely lost.
5. In other words, perfect is when you stay in the same key- e.g. You started the piece on C Major, and ended with C Major.
Imperfect is when you go to a different key, but keep it the same major/minor. e.g. You started at G Major, but ended in D Major.
Interrupted is when you go to a different key completely, with a different major/mine. e.g. You started at B Major, but ended up in C Minor.
Hopefully this has been educational to you, if you have been struggling with the Aural part of music tests. Enjoy your music journey, best wishes for your exams!

Hiring Rock ‘n’ Roll Bands
Rock music had been dominating the music world from the 50s up to the turn of the 21st century. From the King of Rock, Elvis Presley, who had taken the world by storm, rock music had revolved greatly over the years. Rock music had been refined and enhanced to fit the music cravings of the modern generation. But, may it be timeless rock music from Elvis Presley or the latest rock ‘n’ roll, rock music are sure to rock the house.
Hiring a rock and roll band is not as easy as ‘one, two, three o’clock, eight o’clock rock‘. It is a challenging task. But, you need not worry. Here are great tips to make the task simpler and more fun.
Make a rockin’ list. Start everything with a list. Come up with a list of bands in your area that can rock and roll with the best of them. The internet can come up with numerous hits or you can scour your local newspaper for any ad or mention of bands. Shorten your list to a few bands which fit the bill and which you also can afford to hire.
Do a little check. Read feedback from previous clients. It also would not hurt to call some of them and inquire about the band’s performance. A little insight from people who had experienced the band’s performance will help a lot in making a rocking choice.
Watch them in action. See the goods first before you hire them. You can visit them in one of their gigs or you can watch video or audio samples they may have posted online. Whatever you do, don’t hire them without seeing first how well they rock.
Remember, a great rock and roll band needs not be expensive. If you are a rock and roller yourself, trust your instinct and always choose a band that plays from the heart.

Lady Gaga
Germanotta, hereby known as Lady Gaga, was born March 28, 1986. She was already playing the piano by age four and used that skill as a teenager to play through New York’s open mic nights at age 14. She would never slow down as music quickly became her number one priority. She dropped out of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to further her music career.
She was first discovered by Def Jam Recordings when a CEO heard her singing from down the hall. Her first bump in her career came quickly as just three months later the recording label dropped her without an explanation. She was introduced to songwriter and producer RedOne and started a new career producing songs with him.
The most rumored story of how she adopted the name Lady Gaga was when Rob Fusari, a music producer who assisted in some of her songwriting, attempted to text her Radio Ga Ga after the Queen song. However, due to an auto-correction application in his phone, the text message read Lady Ga Ga and thus her stage name was born.
To get help with her stage image, she began to collaborate with another artist, Lady Starlight. Together they created a burlesque rock show which eventually got the pair invited to play at the Lollapalooza music festival in 2007. Using inspiration from glam rockers David Bowie and Queen, she found a niche for her music when combined the vintage sound with modern pop melodies and an electronic dance music.
Her music was passed along to producer and record executive Vincent Herbert who quickly signed her. She worked as a songwriter for her Sony label mates such as Fergie and Britney Spears. It was not long before Akon discovered her vocal abilities and collaborated once again with RedOne to form Poker Face and Just Dance, two songs that would quickly become chart toppers.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2008 and worked feverishly to finish her debut album The Fame. When it was finally released, the album received numerous positive reviews and became number one in multiple countries. The single Just Dance also topped the charts in six countries including the United States. She later received a Grammy Award nomination for that song in the category of Best Dance Recording.
Her second single, Poker Face, reached almost number one in every large music market. This time, she took the Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Her album was nominated for numerous awards, including Album of the Year and won for Best Electronic/Dance Album.
She headlined her first tour in March of 2009 with The Fame Ball Tour. Lady Gaga’s appearance continued to become more outrageous, and at times more controversial as her fame grew. This year, TIME magazine included her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world; a definite milestone in Lady Gaga’s career as such an honour is not often bestowed on a young artist as herself.

Play Piano
Statistically it can be shown that more people are right handed than left handed. So for a right handed person the left hand will be the weaker hand. In terms of being weak, I mean it doesn’t move as fast and the fingers aren’t as nimble. The muscles on the left hand will be more sluggish because we won’t be using it as much as the right. Due to this weaker left hand, beginner piano players struggle with playing the piano with both hands at the same time.
Being able to learn how to play piano with both hands requires lots of practise. With lots of practise the left hand can be developed to play just as well as the right. With a lot of patience and dedication to learning, every piano player can eventually learn and master playing with both hands simultaneously.
In order to master the technique of playing with both hands at the same time, you need to go about practising the correct way. When you first play a piano piece you should learn to play with each hand separately. After getting used to playing separately with both hands. Try playing a few notes of the piano piece with both hands. Start off with one note first and progress to more and more notes. Maybe try playing a few bars of the piano piece with both hands. Slowly, but surely you will start to develop skills that allow your hands to play together.
It might take a few hours of practise, but what is a few hours in a person life or even a day. Don’t give up and continuously practise playing piano pieces with both hands. Remember to play with each hand separately when you get a new piano piece to play. Eventually you will be able to play new songs with both hands relatively quickly.
Playing the scales with both hands at the same time is another way of teaching yourself how to play piano with both hands. Learning how to play piano with both hands sounds long and tedious. The rewards of taking it slow and learning how to play piano more thoroughly are enormous. Remember not to rush into things and all good things take time. When playing the scales remember to start with the right hand first only. Move on to practising with your left. Then combine both hands together at the same time.
As you get more comfortable with playing the scales with both hands, you can try increasing the tempo. You need to remember to use a metronome to keep track of what tempo you are playing.
As you practise more and more, you will be playing with both hands quite easily. Your muscle memory would have allowed you to play the piano with both hands without you even thinking about it. It will be like your hands are on autopilot.
In conclusion, learning how to play piano with both hands isn’t hard. With lots of patience, persistence and loads of practise you will be playing the piano with both hands in no time. Don’t give up when the going gets tough, push through the hard times and be rewarded in the long run. Anyone can learn how to play piano with both hands. Give it a go today and keep on practising.
